Chapter Nine

—Andrak—

In a hotel room, silently berating myself for being the world’s biggest idiot.

I’d put on my jeans and called for room service the moment I heard the shower go on. Dragons, considering our size, didn’t need much in the way of food for sustenance. Even so, the handful of unripe berries earlier in the evening wasn’t getting the job done.

When I’d asked Shirley if she wanted anything, she’d mumbled something about not being hungry. I’d felt a punch of guilt that was only exceeded by a sense of longing.

The vegan menu was limited. “Two large house salads, no croutons, no dressing, no cheese, extra tomatoes, extra carrots, extra lettuce. A bowl of grapefruit and the mixed fruit platter,” I said into the hotel phone. “And a granola and yogurt parfait and another fruit platter,” I added. I’d seen Shirley eat something similar at the RMCA during my week there. She wasn’t hungry now, but the room had a refrigerator, and it would keep until she wanted it.

I lay back on the bed and counted the swirls in the ceiling tile to avoid thinking about the way Shirley had felt in my arms, the way her skin sang to mine, and the way I’d almost breathed flames when we’d climaxed. Lighting the witch on fire might’ve been less painful than seeing the look in her eyes when I’d gotten up from the bed to shower.

She’d told me I was incredible, and I’d told her, “Thank you.”

Thank you! Of all the dumbass things to say. I should’ve told her that she was the incredible one. That she made me feel. When I held her in my arms, I almost wanted to live.

Only, living wasn’t the plan, was it? I hadn’t told her the real reason I needed my heart back. I was ready to leave this world, but that couldn’t happen as long as the pieces of my heart existed somewhere else. Only my heart, while beating in my chest, once pierced by iron, would kill me. I had a steel spike that I’d mounted on the tallest tower of my castle upon which I planned to impale myself when the time came.

I shook my head as anger at my own stupid behavior replaced the guilt. “I am an incredible fool.” I hadn’t lied to Shirley. Not really. I’d told her I couldn’t love her, and it was true. Not in the way I wanted. Not in the way she deserved. Because if all went as planned, I would not be around for much longer.

I was ready to go. I dreamed of being released from this life for far too long, but I knew if anyone could talk me out of it, it would be the wonderful witch, whose sweetness I could still taste on my lips.

She came out of the bathroom, her hair wrapped in a towel and her damp body covered with a hotel robe. “I’ll conjure us up some clothes for tomorrow,” she said as she sat on the edge of the other bed.
